Helmet Styles & History

PASGT

The PASGT (Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops) was adopted by the US Military during the mid 1980’s and utilized during Operation Desert Storm. This is a traditional military style, brimmed helmet that provides full coverage of the head and ears with multi-layered kevlar construction designed to protect against handgun threats. Typically weighs from 3.1 pounds to 4.2 pounds depending on size.

ACH/MICH

The Advanced Combat Helmet (also referred to as MICH) is the current standard for most military operators. It’s weight is lighter than the PASGT infantry helmet, 2.8 to 3.8 pounds depending on size, with added features to integrate communications devices and NVG brackets. The helmet shell trim also eliminates the front beak and has a higher side trim than the PASGT, allowing greater mobility and range of motion for the user.

FAST/HIGH CUT

The Future Assault Shell Technology (FAST) helmet was first designed for maritime special operations, with high cut sides, above the ear (ATE), in order to accommodate for hearing protection and communications. Advancements in technology and design engineering led to development of ultra-high-molecular -weight polyethylene fibers, which offer high levels of ballistic protection with less weight, only 2.52 to 2.99 pounds depending on helmet size.

SPECIAL OPS

The Special Ops ballistic helmet presents a unique style with a combination of features from both the ACH and high-cut models, designed specifically for Law Enforcement, Special Operations Forces and SWAT personnel. The Special Ops helmet delivers ballistic and impact head protection required for tough tactical operations, as well as meeting stringent U.S. Army quality and impact protection standards. This 3 pound, lightweight design with high-cut sides is outfitted with side rails, front NVG mount and optional modular full-face protection.

BALLISTIC PROTECTION LEVELS

Ballistic helmets used by law enforcement, military and defense contractors must withstand extensive testing to ensure performance in even the most challenging conditions. Materials used today have become much lighter and stronger than in previous years, so to keep up with the latest threats, most manufacturers currently use the modified version of the NIJ standard, which tests against the same specifications as the standard for bullet proof vests and body armor.

LEVEL II

Protects against most factory handgun loads in the caliber 9mm, 357 Magnum, as well as lesser threats such as 12 gauge 00 buckshot, 45 Auto., 22 caliber Long Rifle High Velocity as well as High Velocity 38 Special.

Level II protection against ballistic threats is sufficient in certain settings for law enforcement, and the cost is relatively less than helmets made with materials that can withstand more powerful impacts.

LEVEL IIIA

Provides greater protection and represents the current benchmark for combat helmets used by the military and special ops teams. Protects against most factory handgun loads in the caliber 44 Magnum, 9mm, and 357 Magnum, and against lesser threats.

In addition to protection from ballistic impacts, Level IIIA helmets deliver increased protection from projectile impacts, which are increasingly common in modern combat environments.
